Top 5 SEO Smartphone Apps

Recently a glut of smartphone apps have appeared that are designed to help SEO specialists work more efficiently. Five apps stand above the crowd in terms of ease of use and functionality: Analytics App, Website SEO Audit, SEM Calculator, SEO Pro, and Ego.

Analytics App

Analytics App, by Inblosam LLC, is intended to provide detailed information from Google Analytics in a format that is natural for the iPhone. Unlike the other apps on the list, it supports Google Analytics’s Advanced Segmentation features. This allows users to quickly sort through huge sets of analytical data to understand what’s really important to them. It can generate 55 different reports, displaying up to 100 rows of data at a time. It also includes a “Dashboard Report” feature that provides an overall view of the Google Analytics information for a given site, as well as a “Today” report that only takes into account the information Google collected for that day. Analytics App allows the user to register multiple logins and accounts on the same iOS device. It creates a secure connection directly to Google that ensures the data stays safe. It connects to Google using either WiFi, a good mobile broadband connection, or Edge. Inblosam claims their Analytics App is easier than looking the information up in a desktop browser, and many times they are correct.

Website SEO Audit

Unlike Analytics App, Website SEO Audit is not meant just to measure current SEO performance, but to explain it. It analyzes a given website for a number of SEO-related factors: its Google® PageRank, the number of backlinks and indexed pages it includes, the relevancy of its meta tags, and how long it takes to load each page. It even analyzes the HTML’s heading tags and image alt tags for their relevancy to the website’s purpose. It includes some Google Analytics data as well, although not nearly as extensively as Inblosam’s Analytics App. Data created from Website SEO Audit can be saved within the app for later.

SEM Calculator

The SEM Calculator from By E-String Technologies Inc. is intended to help plan SEO and web advertising operations. It features multiple calculators for equations SEO specialists commonly use. For example, it can calculate whether a CPM or CPA ad purchase would be more effective under given website use circumstances. For SEO specialists who also advertise through Google Adwords, Yahoo!, or MSN, this is a convenient and dependable way to plan advertising based on information provided by Analytics App.

SEO Pro

SEO Pro by Benjamin Spiegel combines several SEO functionalities into one package. First, it can monitor the page rank of any website on several different engines: it supports Google PageRank, Alexa Rank, Yahoo Inlinks, Yahoo Indexed, and Compete.com Rank. It also searches Digg to see how many times the site has been posted there. Like Website SEO Audit, it can show a site’s meta tags. It also supports the iPhone 4′s Retina screen, but requires a strong mobile broadband connection.

Ego

Ego, in contrast to the aforementioned apps, is heavily based around analysis of social media sites. It can give website stats on services such as RSS feeds, Mint, Tumblr, Twitter, and Vimeo which is important to have a really good mobile broadband connection. As social media sites become more and more important in managing web presence, Ego’s ability to monitor social media will help SEO specialists plan their SEO strategies. Ego also provides Google Analytics data, as Analytics App and SEO Pro do.

While these apps may not completely change the way one does SEO, they do make things easier when on the go and elsewhere. They provide common SEO functionality in convenient and intuitive packages.

Say Good Bye to My 5 Year-old Business

Time flies! My partners and I have been running a lodging house in Kuching, Sarawak- Pinnacles Lodge Kuching, for more than 5 years. We all believe it is time for us to sell off our business after so ‘long’ in this industry. Why did I say long!? Long because it is a very competitive business and long because of the lack of support from government in Tourism Industry! So you would not like to stay too long in the industry if you are not happy with the red tapes and also monetary return (it is pity to see the number of tourist coming to Kuching as compared to Sabah).

When we first started, there were around 3 or 4 lodging houses or hostel or B&B, whatever you want to call it, in town only. But after 5 years in the business, there are easily 30 lodging houses in town. Some of them come and go… and we are blessed that we  still survive! We have learnt a lot in this industry and we have seen many different kinds of people- good and bad, honest and dishonest, fussy and unfastidious, male, female and transgender (you know what I mean)…

Along the years, our business benefited a lot from online exposure. That is something one should not overlook-integrate or compliment offline business with online exposure!! Especially the  business in service industry. The lodging house website: http://www.pinnacleskuching.com, ranks pretty well in Google Search Engine Result Pages (SERPs) for most of the important keywords related to the business. For example:

Kuching Backpacker – No 1

Kuching Backpacker Hostel – No 1

Budget Traveller Kuching – No 1

Kuching Lodge – No 2

Kuching Budget Hotel – No 2

etc….

I must say that those keywords are really not competitive at all. They are very easy to rank for if you know how to do it. You can stay on top even without any Offpage SEO. With some twists on the Onpage SEO, you  can rank well in Google. So what is the implication when you see that Pinnacles Lodge website is ranked on top of Google? ==> Money right! When Pinnacles Lodge is ranked well in Google, we are getting online room reservation while many others are not. If you own a hotel or lodging house and your website is nowhere to be seen on the 1st page of Google, it is very unlikely that you will be getting online booking. It is the fact that one will go and search online for their accommodation before they go traveling.

So if you are running an offline business, try to brainstorm to see how can the online exposure helps in your business. It is not surprise that your online income may end up more than your offline’s one day. Last but not least, good luck to the new owner of Pinnacles Lodge and you are lucky to inherit a good website  which ranks very well in Google from us

How I Got My Site Back Up On Google Search After Being Penalised

This is part of the learning curve in my SEO journey. I have many sites working for me online. Some were built many years ago and some are pretty new. And for all my sites, SEO is a must so that I can get free traffics from Google. But SEO is always a long journey. And it does take some effort to have your sites ranked well on Google search, especially for the competitive keywords.

I have one of my site penalised by Google 4 months ago. The site ranked very well for some competitive keywords and it has generated very handsome income for me on daily basis. But after the site being panalised by Google, the traffic and business for that site has dropped drastically.

There are a few lessons learnt here:

1. One has to accept that there is always down time in any businesses. So it is always good to diversify your portfolio and niche. Most important, we have to learn how to embrace the down time.

2. Engage a decent SEO company if you want to outsource your SEO works. Make sure you do your due diligent check and ask for week report on their work to make sure they are doing a property job.

3. When you site is penalised by Google. Do not give up on the site. Keep building links and other SEO works. The more links you have (good links built professionally and naturally), the more credits Google will give you. And therefore you are going to have your site back up on the Google Search Result Pages soon.

SEO is the art to rank your website high on Google.  Mike  is literally one of the brightest minds in the world of Search Engines and Search Engine Optimization (SEO). He is a member of the World Association of Internet Marketers and of SEO Professionals. He is also a contributing author to SEOToday.com and a  founder of Search Engine Academy of North Carolina.

The SEO infographic is very informative and interesting. It gives you a clear idea of what SEO is all about and how each task related to the whole. However I would personally make some minor amendments or adding few more things on the ‘Page Optimisation’. For example, I would have social media integration on the page. But overall it is a good piece of work!

Mike did point out that it would be useful to add something that shows how various elements and activities in the SEO process relate to what matters to the client (if you are a consultant doing SEO for others).  Even better would be a nice section depicting how to determine what matters to the client, a nice step by step Client – SEO KPI (key performance indicators) chart.  After all, that’s the real big picture that matters most – how it benefits the client.

If you are struggling to understand the whole picture. Do not worry about that. If you have a website and want to rank high on Google, you can always come to me as my company also offering SEO service to many clients online.

Keyword Research – Rank Easily on Google SERPs

Unless you are a hard core SEO guy, you don’t want to go head to head with the big players in the Google SERPs.

For example, if you are selling women clothing, you may not have time and capacity to rank 1st or on the 1st page of Google SEPRs for the money keyword like ‘women clothing’. Even if you have the capacity to rank on the 1st page, it may take you few months or even year to get there. Search Engine Optimisation is the Key to Your Online Success

Basic On Page Optimisation

SEO is Myth.. But there are rules you should follow

If you want to have your website ranks on the top of Google Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs), you will have to know how to please Google, as easy as that. Pleasing Google is not difficult if you know what Google want. It is like if you know how to please the emperor in Ming Dynasty, then you will get promoted and have unlimited access to wealth!

To please Google, you will have to do well in both On page and Off page optimization for your website. If you want me to give a percentage weight to the importance of On page optimization, I would say it is around 20% of the overall optimization task. Off page optimization will make up the remaining 80%. Having said that, if the keywords you are targeting is very competitive, then the Off page optimization may take up even bigger share!

Before I go on, I just like to stress that I am talking about Google.com SERPs not Google.com.my, Google.co.uk  or Google.com.sg. I always like to target international SERPs, I do not want to limit my site to only Malaysia search engine results or end up being the King of Singapore or UK only. We have to aim big and make big money.  Rank No.1 in Malaysia or Singapore SERPs may make you $1000 per month, but rank No.1 in the worldwide SERPs may make you $50,000 per month (the worldwide search volume is always higher than the local search results). So you can see why I always encourage people to aim big and look further beyond one country. Internet has no boundary.

To do well in On page optimization, there are few important and basic items one have to take good care of:

1. Have the keywords you want to target on the Title Tag.
2. Have the keywords at the Header.  It can be in the H1 or H2 header.
3. Have the keywords well spread out in the page. But don’t try to stuff the keywords in the page as Google is no more young kid in the market. You will be penalized by Google for keywords stuffing.
4. Have site map – both XML and user facing. Site map make life easy for those surfing your site. It is easy to manoeuvre around with a site map.
5. Have call to action like Buy now especially when you are doing e-commerce site.
6. Meta Description and Domain name may not be that important anymore, but it is good to have the keywords mentioned there.
7. All the images in the page should have Alt text so that Google understand what is the image about (Google can’t read image so you need to tell Google what is the image about by text).
8. Do not have broken link in the page.
9. Have inter pages link within your domain.
10. Create more pages instead of 1 page website.
11. Do not have different url, i.e. Google read http://AddyKho.com different from http://www.AddyKho.com. So always be consistent with your url.
12. Do not have hidden links or keywords behind your html source. Google is not stupid to read what you are trying to do.
13. Most Important of All – Have GOOD CONTENT. Content is the King. Google love original content and also website with frequent updates. Therefore you hardly see a landing page ranks on the 1st page of SERPs.

If you want to have easy life and do well in On page optimisation, please consider using WordPress for your website. WordPress is SEO friendly in term of its site structure.  Don’t forget to install the All in One SEO plugin for your WordPress.

Remember this, On page optimisation is the 1st step in the SEO campaign after you have had the targeted keywords in mind.

So what are the benefits of ranking well in SERPs, say the top 5 of Google results on the 1st page? You will see money coming in without spending a dim! Google Is a Myth

It is always a myth how Google rank the sites. There is no black and white rules written on the board for you and me to follow as Google like to keep the secrets inside their magic box. And because of this, there are a lot of Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) ‘professors’ out there teaching different SEO techniques and a lot of times they are saying things contradicting to one another. For example, some are saying the domain name is important and best to choose the domain name that is similar to the keywords you are targeting, i.e. if your target keyword phrase is ‘green living’, then you ought to go for something like GreenLiving.com or Green-Living.com etc. Some are saying the domain name is irrelevant to the keywords and Google do no give extra ‘points’ to the site having keywords in their domain name.

All we know is – Google is BIG… as in B-I-G big. Google have over 19 data centers in the United States and at least 17 more all over the world. And each of these data centers are sitting on a 500,000 square feet of land EACH, with a cost of around $600 MILLION each. YES- $600 MILLION!

You and me are adding a HUGE proportion to the web every second!

So people always thought Google is a very complex beast. Google have very big brain and No one really know or understand how Google rank the website. Sometimes just when you think you are getting close, they change their algorithm again. According to Google Chief Engineer- Matt Cutts, Google tweet their search algorithm around 1 time every day. So that explains why certain sites may drop from 1st page to the 3rd overnight! But there are certain things of course still remain unchanged. For example the importance of backlinks. How Google Work

Even though no one really knows in detail how Google rank the sites. And no one knows what has been changed in the search algorithm from day to day. But we do know how Google work. I found this very good image/flow chart from ppcblog.com. And I am sure it will fascinate you if you are really keen to learn SEO. It is a big image, so you may want to right click and save it onto your computer to read.

Go ahead and start at the top and follow it all the way down. This chart takes you from adding new content to the web to how pages are returned and ranked when a user searches Google for related terms and phrases.

Don’t be scared by me saying ‘No one really knows how Google rank the site’. If you read carefully, I also said that there are certain things which we know Google consider to be important. So if you want to be successful in your internet venture, spend some times learning SEO 

Authority Back Links

If you are keen to learn how to add some oomph and improve the ranking of your website in Google, you should consider using authority back links.  Before I go further, back links are links (your website url or domain name) from other people websites to your sites. You don’t need tons of these to move up the ranks, but having some authority back links will catch the attention of the search bots and make it easier for them to rank you, index you, and post you as being more relevant to the search engine.

Authority back links are links from sites that are older, established, of high page rank and are popular sources of information for searchers.  Some examples are  Ezine articles and Scribd, both of which are article directory sites that you can use to easily upload articles pertaining to your site for readers. I have attached herewith a list of  30 Article Directories recommended for your reference.You can click on the image below to download the  list.

Other examples of authority back links are sites such as Wikipedia or sites that end in .gov or .edu.  Wikipedia is considered to be something of an authority site because so many people use it.  Of course some sites are considered to be authority sites because they are older, they are made up of many people instead of just a few, and people use them for information all the time and trust their source. That is why Google like to Rank Wikipedia site on the 1st page.

Article Directories

The easiest way to start getting some authority back links on your site is to submit articles to directories such as Ezine and Scribd.  This is also one of the most efficient ways to get people to come to your site because the articles you write will be related to your website and will have your URL right in or at the bottom of the article (resource box).  Both of these sites are very easy to work with, so it’s a simple way to get some authority added to your website and they are free to submit to unless you want all the perks, in which case you’ll have to pay a subscription fee.  However, for use in one or two sites, they are ideal just the way they are.

In order to write for these sites, it’s important to stick close to the editorial guidelines-broadly speaking, you have to have articles that are original, do not overtly advertise any one thing, and have to fall within a range of word count; usually between 250 and 5000 words.  Be sure to stick with the guidelines and your articles will be posted that much faster which means more readers and more traffic to your site.

Squidoo

Squidoo is a blog and a community site rolled into one; it allows you to build ‘lens’  (article too) on whatever you are interested in or whatever your online business covers.  These lens are then seen by everyone else in the Squidoo community or online and can be read, commented on and used as a link to your business site. Lens are one stop webpages of sorts that point readers to your blogs, websites, social media and so on; plus you can make a bit of money of them (via affiliates like Amazon, eBay etc) for yourself or your charity.  You can also use your lens to talk about yourself or your business.  It’s free to use and very easy to get started on, so it’s a good way to get some authority back links on your website.  Make sure to post new and fresh content regularly and keep your lens within the site guidelines (no X-rated material for example) and you’ll be able to use your lens to really promote your website.

Each of your lens should have at least three modules, plenty of content, pictures, relevant tags, and has unique content, not things that are lifted from other sites.  Modules are things like RSS, text content, photos, and a guestbook, to name a few things.  Keeping your lens updated is one of the best ways to become a lens expert and you can do this easiest by having an RSS module on your Lens so that when you update your blog, your Squidoo will be updated too.

Finally, make sure to update your biography with About you, a link to your website and a photo of yourself so that people really feel like they can get to you know you.

Keep in mind that your Lens has to be rated G or R; not adult content is supported through Squidoo anymore, so this is something to keep in mind if you have an adult oriented website that you want to promote.

HubPages

HubPages is a site where you can post articles, not blogs, related to your main keywords.  HubPages is a great way to be seen as an expert in your field and thus have more people interested in your business and your niche.  Just like Squidoo, HubPages are ‘mini webpages’ within the larger HubPages website. It’s important to use your main keywords in the things like the Hub URL and in your tags so that you can be properly ranked and optimized within HubPages and in the greater online picture. Again, please check out the Hubpages I created for Home Air Purifiers.

HubPages is much like Squidoo otherwise; you allow people to comment and rate your articles, post pictures, and have a biography where you can have a URL back to your main business.  Just like Squidoo no adult content is allowed, so again, if you have an adult website, go elsewhere.  Gambling is also prohibited, as is copying other articles.

Before you go tearing off to sign on with all of these sites-Ezine, Scrbd, Squidoo, HubPages and etc, take a moment to consider, honestly, how much you can do.  While it’s true that the more authority back links you have the better, you also have to keep up with all of the sites you’ve joined up.  All four of these sites demand original content that hasn’t been published on other article directories and Squidoo and HubPages demand that you do more than simply write; you also have to do things like have images, other media, links, and even advertisements to make a bit of money.  This means that you have to the time to pour into these sites to make your corner worth viewing.

If you’re a newbie, I would suggest to start on Ezines and HubPages-Ezines is the top rated in the article directories, and HubPages is relatively easy to use.

You can always try your luck at DMoz. Dmoz is the largest,  most comprehensive human-edited directory of the Web. It is constructed and maintained by a vast, global community of volunteer editors. You can submit your site  for approval. Sometimes it may take months for your site to get listed there. However, from my experience, it is not that easy to get listed there. So you just have to try your luck. Google likes Dmoz a lot and if you can have your site listed there, you can beat a site with 100s of back links from article directories!

Your Own Domain Name

Domain name? What is so important about it? I just chat on Facebook with a friend in London just now. She mentioned to me she has a blog but the blog is not making any money for her. She then showed me her blog. My immediate reaction after I saw the domain name with .tk is- why using the FREE domain and hosting when come to writing her own blog?

What’s a Domain Name and Why do You Need it?

A domain name is equivalent to a piece of land with your name on it for yourself online, e.g. addykho.com, alibaba.com etc.  It gives you the ground you need to build your blog, online store, or whatever else you want to do online.  It’s best to buy your domain outright because then you can sell it, transfer it, do whatever you want with it and be in control of protecting it.  This makes it much easier and less stressful to work with; besides, buying a domain and hosting it isn’t all that expensive anyway.

There is no doubt that my friend is a very good writer, lawyer and musician. But no matter how many blog posts she has written, at the end of the day, the blog still does not belong to her. It is owned by the free host! The blog may be deleted by the free host whenever they want to.

If you want someone to take your blog or business seriously, you will have to get yourself a domain name and a hosting package. If you are using a free host, how would one think about your business online? If one day, your blog or website is getting very popular and worth even up to million dollars, how can you sell your website to someone else if it does not owned by you?

So think long term and get yourself a domain name with professional hosting.  I have been using HostMonster so far and I am very happy with their professional service.

Choosing Your Own Domain Name

Choosing your own domain name means picking a name for your website or blog.  It’s a very important step and it’s very exciting because it means that all the content of your website will be sitting on a piece of internet land registered under the name you would like it to be remembered, otherwise known as your domain name.  So, put your thinking caps on and get excited because it’s time to stake out your claim to the internet. You have to be careful on this because once the name is chosen, you don’t want to keep changing it anymore. Example, if I have http://addykho.com for my blog, I do not want to change to Kho.com or Addy.com anymore because people already remember my blog as AddyKho.com.

How the heck do you name your domain in such a way that it will useful to you and memorable to others?  It’s a creative process, but a very important one, so have some guidelines is nice.

1.  Use your theme keyword in the selection of your domain and use .com, .net or .org, starting with the .com as it’s the most recognizable. If you are selling or blogging about guitar, then you may want to have the word “guitar” in the domain name. You can optimize your site for search engines because you can have the main keyphrase or keywords  right in the URL (it carries a little weight in SEO) and in the title of your site.

2.  Use hyphens if you have to. Sometimes the domain name you desire is taken by others, e.g. NoMoreDirtyRoofs.com. So instead, you can always try No-More-Dirty-Roofs.com. In fact, with hyphen, Google can understand it better that it is of four different words and give Google better idea what your site is about.

3. Register your domain for minimum 2 years. For some weird reason, Google loves domain registered for longer period. If everything being equal, then the website with longer domain ownership will rank better in the Google search results page.

4. Not your own name. This is one of the biggest mistake I ever made. If you want to ‘grow’ your website and probably sell it one day, then you should not register the domain as your own name, unless you want to keep it personal and not for making money purpose. I should have registered something like Online-Biz-Ideas.com since I am posting more on Online business. If one day I want to sell off this blog, then I will be selling off my very own Name- AddyKho.com. Of course I would not do that.

If you have a theme keyword in mind, you can easily automate this process by using some online tools such as www.domainsbot.com, which will check your domain name ideas and see if they already exist or if you have to do some tweaking.  If you get yourself a Hosting Package from HostMonster, you will be given a domain name free of charge. It is a real bargain. HostMonster is having a special promotion now- $5.95 per month for the hosting!

One more important tip to you -You want the ability to host unlimited domains on your hosting package. What you have to  do is to go to Google Alerts and key in the keywords of your business. For example, if I am in the Discount Coupon Business, then I will key in  “discount coupon’ in Google Alerts.

Google will capture all activities online in related to ‘discount coupon’ and send all the info or news of ‘discount coupon’ to my mail box. What I have to do is to check my mail box to find out what other people are doing online to promote the ‘discount coupon’ business. The alerts normally come in News, Blogs and Web forms. It is very comprehensive. As you can see from the image above, you can choose to receive the alerts everyday or once a week or as it happens.

Why is this information important to you? Let’s say I am in Discount Coupon Business. With all the Google Alerts I am getting, I know what other people around the world are doing in this business. I know what kind of discount coupons are given out, how they talk the merchants into giving them very good discounts etc. And I also know in what ways the discount coupons are given out, i.e. via sms? online print out? attached in the magazine? Basically you have all the up-to-date info in front of you everyday! You will have the upper hands over your local competitors easily. Imaging the Era without internet….

For those who are interested in Search Engine Optimisation, you will be able to build your banklinks on those websites which are related to your business or keywords.  (**Backlinks are the url (your website url) placed on other people websites that link back to your website.  The more quality backlinks you have, the higher chance your website will rank well in Google Search Result Pages). You can save yourself plenty of times from looking around online for the good websites to build your backlinks.  Google alerts basically tell you which websites are doing the same business and having the same  targeted keywords as yours.
